Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas (WSNCT) held their 20th Annual Awards of Excellence celebration on Wednesday, January 25th at the Ruthe Jackson Center in Grand Prairie, TX. Each year WSNCT recognizes individuals who have successfully particpated in workforce programs; as well as partners who have made a positive impact on employers, workers and the community.

Gearbox Software, Weatherford ISD, Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas Honored at Texas Workforce Conference
Gearbox Software (Gearbox) received the Local Employer of Excellence Award for the Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas area at the Texas Workforce Commission's (TWC) 20th Annual Texas Workforce Conference held Dec. 7-9 in Houston. The award honors private-sector employers that are actively involved with Texas Workforce Solutions and have made a positive impact on employers, workers and the community.
Workforce Solutions for North Central has a successful partnership with Gearbox in Frisco, where it employs over 300 people as an award-winning, independent developer of interactive entertainment. Known for developing popular games, including Borderlands and Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3, Gearbox moved its Frisco headquarters in the fall of 2015. The move created excitement and opportunities for tech-savvy job seekers across North Texas hoping to break into the multi-billion-dollar gaming industry.
Texas Workforce Solutions Vocational Rehabilitation Services Transferring to Workforce Solutions Office in Corsicana
Two vocational rehabilitation services counselors from the Texas Workforce Solutions – Vocational Rehabilitation Services office in Corsicana will be the first to officially move into co-located space at Workforce Solutions offices as part of the transition of services from the former Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services (DARS) to the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). These team members will integrate vocational rehabilitation services with workforce development and employment services provided by Workforce Solutions North Central Texas area. Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas Establishes a High-Tech Sector Development Plan, "Inspire North Texas" Collaboration At Its Best!
In 2015, Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas (WSNCT) participated in a local collaborative initiative with the Frisco Economic Development Corporation. This innovative industry sector outreach sparked discussion of workforce needs for local high-tech businesses, particularly those in the gaming industry.
Private-sector employers (including PVP Live, Gearbox and MAGNIN & Associates), an industry association (International Game Developers Association), representatives from the Governor Abbott's Economic Development and Tourism Office and Representative Scott Turner's Office, and educational partners including Southern Methodist University and Collin College participated in the initiative. The goal is to identify solutions to address industry needs for the digital technology industry sector and to gather information from industry representatives on their most pressing workforce needs. The discussion between WSNCT, employers and community leaders, established the WSNCT High-Tech Sector Development Plan, "Inspire North Texas." In October 2015, the Texas Workforce Commission dedicated $1 million dollars to support collaborations between Workforce Development Boards and Economic Development Corporations to provide high-demand occupational job training in local workforce areas.
Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas was awarded $75,000.00 from the Texas Workforce Commission and Terrell Economic Development Corporation pledged to match dollar for dollar for a total project cost of $150,000. Read more about this grant in the Press Release.
Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas Community-Based Job Training Grant Produces Skilled Workers In Supply Chain Logistics
On July 1, 2010, Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas (WSCNT) launched a Department of Labor (DOL) Community Based Job Training Grant (CBJT). This $2.5 million grant was WSCNT's opportunity to expand the CLT certification to a broader audience in the DFW region as well as expansion into the Houston metropolitan area. Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas Finishes $4.9 Million Grant for H1B Technical Skills Training
Texas is the third largest user of H-1B visas, non-immigrant visas designed to allow U.S. employers to recruit and employ foreign professionals in specialty occupations with the US for a specified period of time. The robust technology base of DFW and the continued growth of the technology sector in the region's economy are forcing local firms to search the world for talent due to a critical shortage of skilled labor force. FMC Technologies, Saint-Gobain Abrasives and Stephenville ISD Partner with Ranger College for $1.2 Million in Training Grants
FMC Technologies, Saint-Gobain Abrasives and Stephenville ISD have partnered with Ranger College to provide job training using two Skills Development Fund grants totaling $1,209,415 from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). Flowers Baking Co., LoneStar CNC Partner with North Central Texas College for $515,124 Job-Training Grant
Flowers Baking Co. of Denton and LoneStar CNC have partnered with North Central Texas College (NCTC) to provide job training for 250 new and incumbent workers using a $515,214 Skills Development Fund grant from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC). The grant will benefit workers in the Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas area. Read more about it in the Press Release.
Adult Education & Literacy North Central Workforce Regional Coalition
The Adult Education & Literacy/North Central Workforce Regional Coalition was formed in June 2015 to promote integration, cooperation, and collaboration. The Regional Coalition addresses transitional issues, shares information, and best practices, explores systems and services for closing strategic and operational gaps in services and ensures integration of services within the North Central Texas Workforce Board area.
Participating partners include Cleburne ISD, Denton ISD, Weatherford ISD, and Navarro College. The purpose of the Regional Coalition is to develop strategies for system improvements; oversee, analyze, and adjust strategy implementation; share best practices to assist program achievement and promote continuous improvement; track and support the achievement of state, federal, and/or local performance goals and targets; and provide basic education and literacy programs to eligible participants in North Central Texas.
Leadership for Workforce & Education Development
The Leadership for Workforce and Educational Development was founded in April 2015. Executive and senior leadership from Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas, Collin College, North Central Texas Community College, Ranger College, Navarro College, Trinity Valley College, Weatherford College, Hill College, and Paris Junior College signed a Memorandum of Understanding based on the premise that regional economic improvement occurs when leaders in business, education, and workforce development partner on high-level strategies that achieve systemic improvement in talent development. These key partners have mutually committed to create a long-term vision for education, economic and workforce development, and to develop strategic linkages to stakeholders in business and education by sharing and capitalizing on promising practices. Their agreement to share metrics and data essential to change, developing career pathways, and implementing strategies that align primary, secondary, and postsecondary education and workforce development, ensures students are college and career ready.
Regional Economic Development Steering Committee
The Regional Economic Development (RED) Steering Committee was created in June of 2015 and is open to economic developers practicing within North Central Texas. The primary objective of RED is to enhance economic vitality and employment opportunities. RED develops, implements, and refines programs and services in partnership, collaboration, and strategic alliances with a network of other workforce/economic development organizations. RED implements support strategies designed to strengthen the business community, align the local pool of qualified human capital with businesses in need of employees, and develop strategic partnerships for career pathways.
Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas Finishes $4.9 Million Grant for H1B Technical Skills Training
In April 2012 Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas (WSNCT) and its training partners AT&T, IBM, Lockheed Martin, Labinal, and North Central Texas College (NCTC) responded to the need by applying for the Department of Labor H-1B Technical Skills Training program to address the shortage of skills in the STEM and IT industry sectors. Funds were used to provide education, training, and job placement assistance in technology heavy industries. The project successfully raised the technical skill levels of American workers in North Texas and, over time, reduced the need for local businesses to use the H-1B visas to find talent. Nebraska Furniture Mart (NFM) of Texas received the Employer Award of Excellence for Workforce Solutions for North Central Texas (North Central) at the Texas Workforce Commission’s (TWC) 19th Annual Texas Workforce Conference held Nov. 18-20 in Dallas. The Employer Award of Excellence honors employers that are actively involved with their local workforce board and have made a positive impact on employers, workers and the community.
